Under the hood: A new engine for Pierce Cedar Creek Institute's website

Pierce Cedar Creek Institute - Web site

By now, it's no secret that we love Drupal at DVQ Studio. It's the most powerful open-source content management system around (sit down, Wordpress) for nonprofits seeking the kind of dynamic, feature-rich websites today's audiences demand. With turn-key forums, blogs, event calendars, and even option for donor management integration, every nonprofit should consider placing Drupal at the center of their technology hub.

And so it was for Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, whose previous site was a static and ever-growing list of cumbersome HTML files. In laymen's terms, that means that small changes -- like adding a new event -- had to be coded in behind the scenes and by hand. Adding a new page to the navigation meant editing every single other page on the site. Not only is this an unrealistic solution when staff capacity is at a premium, it involves getting your hands dirty in the code itself… something that tends to make a lot of people uneasy.

To address these content management issues, we installed Drupal as the behind-the-scenes content management system, which acts as an interface for the staff to update the site with ease. We also gave the design a new "paint job," if you will, with an emphasis on revamping the homepage so that it felt distinct from the rest of the pages and featured large, compelling images.

Finally, we upgraded key features such as the event calendar and news feed, so that this dynamic content populates key areas of the site and updates automatically throughout the site whenever edits or additions are made. Not only does this make the site feel fresh, but it's good search engine juju, too!
